Hot Water Heating Bill Doesn't Have to Be High

Seems I'm talking a lot about energy saving tips these days but so is everyone else. High gasoline cost is one thing but saving on home utilities is another. Here's another way to cut corners to save money. The water heater can add significantly to your utility bill. Is there anyway to reduce that cost short of taking cold showers? Yes there is. Let's look at a couple things you can do.

  • Lower your water heater’s temperature down from 140F to 120F. This will also help extend the life of your water heater.
  • Install an insulated jacket around your water heater. This helps keep the water warmer longer and reduces the amount of energy needed to continually warm the water. You can also wrap your hot water pipes with foam insulation to keep water in the pipes warm.
  • Install a low-flow showerhead to conserve hot water. Low-flow showerheads use 25% to 50% less hot water than the regular type.
As I've said in previous blogs it may be only a small saving but added with others it can make a difference. Have a great weekend!
