HOME STORM PROTECTION

I wish I didn't need to keep talking about storms but we are still in the potential path of Gustav. While we often hear comments about preparing before the storm I realized there are two types of preparations necessary. One type if you stay and another if you evacuate.

If you stay you will not need to buy the same items you would if you evacuated. For instance if you plan to weather the storm and lose lights in the aftermath then you'll need batteries, water, non-perishable food and a method to prepare it. If you leave you'll have other priorities such as taking extra important papers, photos, etc.

One thing that will be necessary whether you stay or leave is protecting your home from storm damage as much as possible. Here are a few things to consider:
  • No matter how well-constructed your home glass is one of it's most vulnerable areas. Once windows break (usually by flying debris) and strong winds enter the house it can cause the roof to lift off and water to enter. Hurricane Glass or Shutters can help prevent that.
  • Secure all entry doors including the Garage door.
  • Trim tree branches that could fall on your home.
  • Safely secure or store outdoor furniture, birdbaths or fixtures that might fly around.
Let's hope and pray we'll dodge another bullet with Gustav.
